Continuing the Conversation: ACSE Hosts Dynamic Webinar on Responsible AI in Scholarly Publishing

By  Clara Slone Jul 24, 2025 2599 16

On Tuesday, July 23, 2025, at 3:00 PM Gulf Standard Time (GST), The Asian Council of Science Editors (ACSE) hosted a highly engaging webinar focused on one of the most critical and timely issues in the world of scholarly communication: Responsible AI in Scholarly Publishing: Tools, Ethics, and Implementation.”

As part of ACSE’s ongoing commitment to empowering the publishing community across Asia and beyond, this webinar was curated to unpack both the promise and challenges of AI integration in research workflows—from submission and review to ethical considerations and accountability.

This 90-minute session, expertly facilitated by Martin Delahunty (Director, Inspiring STEM & ACSE Advisory Cabinet Member) and moderated by Maryam Sayab (Director of Communications, ACSE), brought together leading voices from publishing, pharma, and tech sectors to explore the evolving role of AI across various dimensions of scholarly communication.

Featured Speakers & Topics Covered

Martin Delahunty (Inspiring STEM & ACSE) opened the discussion with a landscape view of AI adoption in publishing, covering editorial workflows, peer review, and discovery, and shared tangible use cases that are reshaping industry practices.

Jonathan Lee (Takeda & ISMPP) shared industry perspectives from the medical and pharmaceutical publishing sector, highlighting governance, compliance, and the need for professional standards to evolve as AI technologies advance.

Adam Day (Clear Skies) dived deep into research integrity, sharing how AI is currently being used to detect papermills and misconduct, while also addressing the need for human oversight and collaboration with publishers.

Chi Wai (Rick) Lee (World Scientific Publishing) offered strategic insights from a publisher’s perspective, including challenges in AI implementation across Asian markets and how regional contexts influence technological adoption.

The Conversation Continues…

While the session included an open Q&A and interactive discussion, the time limitation meant many excellent audience questions remained unanswered.

We would now like to open the floor once again, this time through the ACSE blog. If you attended the session (or even if you’re just curious), we invite you to submit your follow-up or unanswered questions directly in the comments below. Our panelists will respond to selected questions, and we’ll publish a follow-up blog post capturing their insights and additional reflections.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this important conversation. At ACSE, we’re proud to support ongoing, inclusive discussions on the future of scholarly publishing, shaped by technology, guided by ethics, and driven by community needs.
